Ph.D. Program and Teaching Assistantship Application

The graduate application is currently closed. The application will reopen in September, we hope you return then. In the meantime, our application instructions are posted below.

Welcome to the online application for the UO Physics Ph.D. program.

You may apply to the program here OR request a paper application from Bonnie Grimm (bgrimm@uoregon.edu). Non-Ph.D. applicants (e.g., master's program applicants) should not use this form, but should contact Bonnie Grimm (bgrimm@uoregon.edu) for application instructions. Note that a master's degree is not required for admission to the Ph.D. program, only a bachelor's degree. If your ultimate goal is the Ph.D. degree, you should apply directly to the Ph.D. program using this form and not to a master's degree program.

All students admitted to the Ph.D. program are also eligible for support as a teaching assistant (graduate teaching fellow). If you are interested in TA support, you should indicate this on the application below.

The application deadline is 15 January for admission beginning in Fall of the following academic year. Late applications will be accepted, but may not receive the same priority as applications submitted before the deadline.

There is no fee for this application. You only need to fill out this application at this stage. If you are admitted and decide to come here, you will need to submit an application to the graduate school; the physics department will cover your application fee.

Application Instructions

Forms

Fill out the admission application and candidate's statement below. Do not fill out the UO Graduate School's Admission Application.

Transcripts

Please ask your school(s) to mail official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work to the address below.

Recommendations

Download the "Report on Graduate Applicant" form (pdf, 121K: new window or direct link), complete your part of the form, and give it to three people who will be recommending you. Ask them to mail (by postal service) the completed forms directly to the Physics Department.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The scores for the General and Subject tests are required for admission to the graduate program and will be part of your file. You should enter your scores in the form below and send a physical copy of your official test results. A photocopy is fine for now; we will require an original (official) copy when you are accepted and decide to attend.

We strongly recommend that you take the October exams for early consideration of your file, as it may take six weeks or more for us to receive the results of the December exams. Consult your local institution for details about these examinations or write to the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 955, Princeton, NJ 08540 (http://www.ets.org).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Requirements

International students are required to take the TOEFL exam by the University of Oregon Graduate School and by the Physics Department, so we cannot waive this requirement, nor can we grant admission before the exam is taken. The Department of Physics minimum acceptable TOEFL total scores are 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based), and 100 (internet-based). These scores are higher than the University of Oregon minimum scores. Note that the University of Oregon Office of Admissions requires an original (official) copy of your TOEFL result if you are admitted, but for now, just send a copy with your application. In addition to the TOEFL, a SPEAK test is required when you arrive on campus.

Deadlines

Our deadline for application (admission only) and assistantship (GTF) is January 15. You will be assured of a decision on your application by March 15 if your file is completed by January 15. The University of Oregon Department of Physics admits only during the fall term.

Mailing Address

Please note: to avoid delays, arrange to have all transcripts and test scores sent directly to the Department of Physics and not to the Admissions Office or the Graduate School. All correspondence and inquiries should also be sent to this address:
